Ritual - Full Prospectus
On view February 28 — May 14, 2025
Deadline for submissions: January 24, 2025
Entry Fee: $25
THEME
Rituals allow us to connect with the world around us. They are ancient and contemporary, personal and collective, secular and sacred. Encompassing the physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and even political, rituals range from the hallowed to the mundane. This exhibition invites artists to submit work that considers how we engage with rituals in our lives—how they shape our identities, guide our behaviors, and transform our perceptions.
MEDIA
This exhibition is open to handmade book and paper arts and related works created as either an edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zines, and broadsides are all encouraged.
JURORS
Ritual will be juried by Sha Towers, Librarian and Associate Dean for Research & Engagement at the Baylor University Libraries, and Erin Mickelson, owner and director of 23 Sandy.

CATALOG
23 Sandy will publish a complete catalog for this exhibition. Entering this exhibition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes.
DISPLAY OF BOOKS
Books will be displayed behind glass, but may be handled by request. If your book is delicate and you would prefer it not be handled, please let us know and we will be happy to put a "do not touch" sign on it. If your book is an edition, you are welcome to send a display copy.
SIZE LIMITATIONS
All works are limited to 22 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.
ENTRIES
A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Entries must be received online no later than the date listed above. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified via email. The Organizers reserve the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality is other than represented in the electronic entry. All submissions will be made online.
FEES
A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works—it is not a per work fee.
SALES
All work submitted must be for sale. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. Sales sometimes happen after the exhibition. If a request to purchase artwork comes directly to 23 Sandy after the artwork is returned to the artist, 23 Sandy works with the artist and collector to facilitate the sale. The terms of the consignment agreement herein are extended to govern such a situation.
PRICES
Your work will be listed for sale at the price you enter on your submission form. Prices cannot be changed after you have submitted your work.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK
You may submit up to ten photographs for each piece you are entering in this show. Remember, your photographs will be used not only for curating the show. They will also be used in a catalog and for marketing purposes, so make sure they are high quality photographs. If they are not, you may be asked to submit more images.
PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY
You may upload up to ten views of each of your works submitted. Some key points to remember:
- Name your files as yourlastname-titlekeyword-1.jpg, yourlastname-titlekeyword-2.jpg etc. Your last name is followed by a hyphen and a book title keyword or two followed by a hyphen and then the view number. No spaces, please.
- All JPGs must be 300 ppi, sized to 7 inches (or 2100 pixels) wide or tall in the longest direction. Images should be print quality RGB files.
- Composite images are not acceptable. One view per image submitted only.
- Black backgrounds in your photographs are not acceptable. Please shoot your photos on a neutral gray or white background. This allows us to present a cohesive catalog. (Black backgrounds are also bad because books lose shadow, dimension and scale on black backgrounds. The same happens when shooting white pages against a white background. We recommend gray for best results.)
SHIPPING
All artwork accepted into this show will ship to 23 Sandy. All shipping and shipping insurance costs to and from 23 Sandy are the responsibility of the artist. Complete instructions will be provided upon acceptance into the show.
INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS
Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds via the submission form. If prepaid return shipping labels are not available for international artists, we will bill all international artists for return shipping fees upon return of the work.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE
The Gallery is insured and shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in the gallery’s possession. The gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork), to the full value artist would have received from the Gallery if the artwork had been sold.
