I created To Make You See for The Al Mutanabbi Street Book Arts Coalition Project. It contains quotes from Joseph Conrad, English novelist of Polish descent (b. 1857- d. 1921), and Lucius Annaes Seneca, Roman philosopher (circa 4 BC - AD 65). Conrad remarked on the power of the written word to invoke awareness and Seneca remarked on the search for meaning as well as grieving, or allowing tears to fall, as a method for finding inner peace. The quotes overlay a map of Baghdad including the Al-Mutanabbi Street area and were chosen for their connection to the importance of books and reading as common ground for all people, as well as to highlight Seneca's advice to allow ourselves to grieve as a method for achieving harmony as opposed to conjuring violence.
Artist Bio
Suzanne Sawyer is a native of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and though she lives elsewhere now, the mountains will always be home. Sawyer holds a BFA in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She completed an MFA in Book Arts from The University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa in 2013 and currently serves as the Education Director at Atlanta Printmakers Studio as well as a Conservation Technician at Emory University Libraries Preservation Lab. Sawyer founded Down Home Girl Studio in 2010 and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. She works in a variety of media areas including sculpture, handmade paper, books, drawings, letterpress printing, and printmaking, and particularly enjoys making objects that satisfy her interest in working both two- and three-dimensionally - to build and object as well as embellish its surface with text or image.
