The Power of the Circle by Maria Stoller
Humanity has many basic needs. One of these is the need for congregation and ritual. This coming together with purpose is supportive in nature and can be helpful in troubled times. How this is done is different from place to place, but the various rites are practiced throughout our whole life. Groups are formed sometimes living in harmony, sometimes creating a separation that is devastating.
Part of the circle or within the circle, we find a connection to our community, a coming together of all parts of life, a wholeness and totality. Offcuts of old unsuccessful art quilts have been reworked to form this artist book. For this piece I have embellished each panel with stitched portraits on organza, intense machine stitching and acrylic paint. The panels have been sewn together using a wooden bead as connection.
Artist Bio
Maria Stoller is a mixed media artist based in Switzerland. Her love of texture and making has been an integral part of her since childhood. Sewing and creating from fabric and paper is at the heart of her work. The use of stitch adds dimension, producing structural, tactile, idea conveyers. Narrative, as well as the drawn line and painted surface, are used throughout. The circle of life in its various stages, the many issues women have in society and the obstacles we all have to face emotionally are continually discussed in her work. Recently integrating Book Art into her media vocabulary, she has incorporated this sculptural form as a means of involving the viewer more completely.
