As a book artist, relatively new to making pop-ups, I wanted to challenge myself to create a miniature pop-up with a Buddhist theme. This book, Tea with Mara, portrays many manifestations of Mara who is sometimes referred to as the tempter, or the demon of death and destruction. It is said that on the night before his enlightenment, Siddhartha was approached by Mara who presented many evil temptations. Rather than resist or react, Siddhartha gently acknowledged Mara's presence and invited Mara to tea.
