George Bernard Shaw's play Saint Joan is based on the life and trial of Joan of Arc. Shaw researched original transcripts of her trial to create his play. A film adaptation of the play was made in 1957 by Otto Preminger with Jean Seberg as Joan. Graham Greene wrote the screenplay which altered the play's storyline. I used imagery from the 1957 film, but followed the original play, ending with her death scene. Joan of Arc is an iconic figure and her story has been told in many ways. Shaw chose to portray Joan as a good person who acted in good faith. I created twelve monotypes on the book's pages and mounted the pages in an accordion format which I attached to the original cover.
Artist Bio
Poppy Dully is a Portland painter, printmaker, and book artist. She has a Bachelors degree in anthropology and design from UC Berkeley and a Masters in Public Health from UCLA. She worked over 20 years in fundraising and nonprofit management. Poppy has exhibited her paintings and prints since 1998. Poppy's altered books are in private and public collections including University of Washington, Stanford University, Multnomah County Central Library, University of Southern California and Savannah College of Art and Design. Her books have been selected for nationally juried exhibitions.
