I am intrigued by the concept of travel as movement from one point to another as well as travel through Time, Space and Place. I enjoy using 21st century technology with book structures and bookmaking methods from the past. Out of Gas began as a series of photos of abandoned gas pumps which I found by the side of a country road outside of Rhinebeck, New York. I was intrigued by the survival of these icons of an earlier time. To me, these rusty gas pumps are symbols of the beginning of the end of the "Age of Oil." Following a workshop with Hedi Kyle at the Philadelphia Center for the Book, I realized the expanding, pivoting panels of this book structure were a good showcase for the panorama of rusting relics I had found at the side of country roads, a symbol of road trips past and America's love affair with the automobile.
