In This Land of Lakes and Volcanoes by Lisa Onstad

This handbook for travelers was inspired by vintage travel guides, wanderlust and a trip to Nicaragua. The text and hand-painted pages of this accordion book tell the story of how Nicaragua’s dramatic landscape and vibrant energy served as both backdrop and instigator to a traveler’s ascent to a manic state. A diary insert includes both personal recollections and facts about Nicaragua’s diverse sights – from a colonial city to an active volcano and a cloud forest.

Artist Bio

Lisa Onstad's artist books are often inspired by chance pairings of found materials, text and images. She adds layers of hand-painted elements, collage and letterpress to her books to create a narrative that can be read in multiple ways. This allows the reader to make her story their own. Lisa received a BA in Fine Art from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon in 1986, and a certificate in Book Arts from the College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon in 2001. Her artist's books can be found in private and public collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Yale University Special Collections, University of Washington, Seattle and the Atelier Vis-à-Vis, Marseille, France. Her artist's book, Aggregate Memory, a collaboration with Macy Chadwick, was included in 500 Handmade Books, Lark Press, 2008 and Book, Art Object, Oak Knoll Press, 2008.
