Heredity explores the concepts of genetic and learned traits within a family. From the obviously inherited, such as eye and hair color, to those traits which may be more nurture than nature—being a gardener, interrupting, or enjoying art. Imagined as one in a series of notebooks, as an obsessive cataloguing of family characteristics, Heredity is book number 14 in a series of notebooks that obsessively catalogue family characteristics. Included are color-coded family tree charts and original stream of consciousness poetry, written as the author recalls each family trait. And, as with any notebook in progress, this one includes notes and photos clipped in: some as reminders and some as illustrations of the specified feature.
Artist BioGinger Burrell is an artist and teacher. She often collaborates with her husband, Greg, who is adept at U-turns because there is something that really needs photographed. She has her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from San Jose State University's school of Art and Design. She teaches book arts at the Palo Alto Art Center and in her home studio. Ginger's primary medium is artist books. Her work includes photography, monotype and composite imagery and explores a range of topics from the personal, to the political, to the universal. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and her books are held in private and public collections. Ginger lives in Morgan Hill, California, with her husband and "too many" cats.
