Birth/Control explores the history and public debate surrounding what should be a private decision between a woman and her doctor. Birth/Control features eleven signatures, each with an original poem and layered imagery of quotes, birth control methods and the female reproductive system.

A woman's womb,
meant to bear Babies for her God.
A pope, a prophet
Dressed in consecrated robes
From pulpit on high
Laying down the law,
Not interested in the Real consequences.
Poverty and pain,
Risking the well-being
of Mother and baby.
Belief that ancient Texts,
apply to current truths
Without revision.
In between signatures are female silhouettes, not of the stereotypical sexualized form, but of real women, each as individual as the choices she makes.
Artist Bio
Ginger Burrell is an artist and teacher. She often collaborates with her husband, Greg, who is adept at U-turns because there is something that really needs photographed. She has her BFA in Photography from San Jose State University's school of Art and Design. She teaches Book Arts at the Palo Alto Art Center and in her home studio. Ginger's primary medium is artist books. Her work includes photography, monotype and composite imagery and explores a range of topics from the personal, to the political, to the universal. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and her books are held in private and public collections.
