Published for Banned Books Week 2012, this letterpress-printed accordion is bound in a fluorescent matchbook cover foil-stamped “Open Mind Before Striking.” It features modern books banned and challenged under categories like racism, nudity, or homosexual content with quotes about censorship and intellectual freedom. A collaboration with Sweet Pea Flaherty of King’s Bookstore, a portion of proceeds benefit Freedom to Read Foundation.
Artist Bio
Jessica Spring is the proprietor of Springtide Press in Tacoma. She designs, prints and binds artist books, broadsides and ephemera incorporating handmade paper and letterpress printing. Small finely-craft editions consider historical topics and popular culture from a unique perspective and collaborative work is an important aspect of the Press. Spring has an MFA from Columbia College Center for Book & Paper Arts and teaches at Pacific Lutheran University. She is co-founder of the Tacoma Wayzgoose at King's Books and the winner of the 2011 Greater Tacoma Community Foundation of Art Award. Springtide Press books are part of many collections including the British Library, Northwestern University, University of Washington, Yale and Savannah College of Art & Design.
