Since moving to the Pacific Northwest 5 years ago from land-locked Oklahoma I've been fascinated with the Pacific Ocean, the rivers and everything connected to them. So when my friends and neighbors go fishing, whether on the ocean or on a river, I'm keen to hear all about it. One thing that is always stressed is the careful selection of what fish is kept and what is put back in the water. The ecology and the future of the whole Pacific Northwest are the primary thoughts—even when the people may have initially gone fishing hoping to catch a fish for dinner. Sometimes instead of grilled salmon what is consumed at the table, along with other foods instead of fish, are the fishing stories. I think the fish stories are just as satisfying. A Fish Story is my exploration, in a playful, wordless, movable pop-up child's board-book format, the symbol of the fish as both basic human nutrition and mythology.
