23 Sandy and form & concept are partnering to present an international juried exhibition of book arts to be shown in the form & concept gallery shop in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

About form & concept
form & concept challenges the perceived distinctions between art, craft, and design. The gallery’s programming acts as a conversation between many converging disciplines, harnessing the power of contemporary creative practice to shatter entrenched narratives. form & concept is located in the Railyard Arts District in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

About 23 Sandy
23 Sandy was founded by book artist & photographer Laura Russell in 2007 in Portland, Oregon. For 10 years, it was a brick-and-mortar gallery space exhibiting unique & edition artist books and paper art. In 2017, 23 Sandy became an online gallery, and in 2020, artist and long-time gallery assistant Erin Mickelson took over operations from her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

THEME
When imperceptible phenomena burst into view, revolutionary change may follow. We learned this in 2020, as an invisible but deadly virus spread across the world, an urgent racial justice movement illuminated dark societal realities, and humanity’s long-simmering crimes against the environment unleashed fires and floods. Unseen forces can shape our lives and surface in unexpected ways, often altering our behaviors and worldviews if and when we are made aware of them. This call for entries invites artists to submit work exploring the idea of the “unseen”—physically, psychologically, philosophically—and encourages artists to consider the theme through concept, structure, and material.

MEDIA
This exhibition is open to handmade book and paper arts and related works created as either an edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zines, and broadsides are all encouraged.

JURORS
UNSEEN will be juried by Barb Tetenbaum - artist & professor of book arts, Jordan Eddy - director of form & concept, and Erin Mickelson - owner & director of 23 Sandy.

ONLINE CATALOG - 23 Sandy will publish a complete online catalog for this exhibition. Entering this exhibition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes.

DISPLAY OF BOOKS - Here at 23 Sandy we feel very strongly that artist books need to be handled to be fully appreciated. Hand wipes are provided for gallery customers along with a friendly word about proper book handling. However, if your book is delicate and you would prefer it not be handled, please let us know and we will be happy to put a "do not touch" sign on it or display it behind glass. If your book is an edition you are welcome to send a display copy.

SIZE LIMITATIONS - All works are limited to 24 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is long accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.

ENTRIES - A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Entries must be received online no later than the date listed above. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified via email. The gallery reserves the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality is other than represented in the electronic entry. All submissions will be made online.

FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works, it is not a per work fee.

SALES - All work submitted must be for sale. We are a commercial gallery, and we firmly desire to support artists with more than just a line on their résumé. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. Sales sometimes happen after the exhibition. If a request to purchase artwork comes directly to the gallery after the artwork is returned to the artist, the gallery works with the artist and client to facilitate the sale. The terms of the consignment agreement herein are extended to govern such a situation.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK - You may submit up to ten photographs for each piece you are entering in this show. Remember, your photographs will be used not only for curating the show. They will also be used in an online catalog and for marketing purposes, so make sure they are high quality photographs.

PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY – You may upload up to ten views of each of your works submitted. Some key points to remember:

• Name your files as yourlastname-titlekeyword-1.jpg, yourlastname-titlekeyword-2.jpg etc. Your last name is followed by a hypen and a book title keyword or two followed by a hyphen and then the view number. No spaces, please.

• All JPGs must be 300 ppi, sized to 7 inches (or 2100 pixels) wide or tall in the longest direction. Images should be print quality RGB files.

• Composite images are not acceptable. One view per image submitted only.

• Black backgrounds on your photographs are not acceptable. Please shoot your photos on a neutral gray or white background. This allows us to present a cohesive printed catalog. (Black backgrounds are also bad because books lose shadow, dimension and scale on black backgrounds. Same happens when shooting white pages against a white background. We recommend gray for best results.)

SHIPPING – All artwork accepted into this show will ship to form & concept. All shipping and shipping insurance costs to and from the gallery are the responsibility of the artist and complete instructions will be provided upon acceptance into the show.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds via the submission form. If prepaid return shipping labels are not available for international artists, we will bill all international artists for return shipping fees upon completion of the show.

As shipping to the gallery and return shipping for unsold works is the responsibility of the artist, we recommend that international artists review shipping costs before submitting their work.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE – The Gallery is insured and shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in the gallery’s possession. The gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork), to the full value artist would have received from the Gallery if the artwork had been sold.
