About POP-UP NOW II
23 Sandy Gallery is pleased to present Pop-Up Now II, a juried exhibition of pop-up and movable artist books. Pop-up books captivate and excite the child in all of us. They come to life as three-dimensional works of art hidden inside the pages of a book. Pop-Up Now II showcases handmade artist books that pop-up, move, slide, twirl, whirl, and even light up. One of the best aspects of book art is the opportunity to push the definition of movable books and tackle deeper subjects. It’s easy to make a whiz-bang pop-up, but book artists are very adept at pushing further and rounding out the book with more context. We are thrilled that so many artists were inspired to make pop-up and movable books that tell a bigger story.

Pop-Up Now II is accompanied by a full-color print catalog.

Prior to that he was an art librarian at the University of Oregon and sold books, rare and otherwise, at Powell’s City of Books in Portland. He has a Bachelor’s in studio art and Masters in Library Science from Ball State University, a Masters in Art History from the University of Oregon, and has attended Rare Books School at the University of Virginia with classes in bindings and typography. Related interests include writing profiles on authors for The Oregonian and reviewing contemporary fiction for the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune and the Miami Herald; letterpress printing and bookbinding; and curating exhibitions in literary and book arts.

Larry Seidman, M.D. is an avid collector and seller of antique movable books, ephemera, puzzles, and pre-cinema optical toys. He has an interest in the preservation of these fragile books and works with a restorer to carefully heal these broken books and bring them back into circulation. He has been a member of the Movable Book Society since its inception, and has been a board member for the past 4 years. He has collected artists books for over 20 years with a main emphasis on miniature and movable titles. He enjoys “show and tell” at the MBS convention, bringing those old oddities with interesting mechanisms from upwards of 200 years ago. Currently, he shares the wonder of pop-ups with his pediatric patients and schools. His website is www.larryseidmanart.com.

Laura Russell, is the owner of 23 Sandy Gallery and a book artist herself.
