I made All Sorts, a tunnel book, during the inaugural Coffey Residency at the University of Florida, Gainesville. The residency task was to research their collection of citrus labels then design and execute an artist's book. I started with the label size and fairly quickly also decided to use the tunnel book format because it would expand into a three-dimensional form that would suggest a fruit crate. Playing on the general concept of labeling and the title of All Sorts, I developed a text of a double alphabet of descriptive words to go inside red rings. By double alphabet, I mean that the sequence went from A to Z twice. The words could be used to describe people and were positive, negative and neutral. The rings of words got progressively smaller from front to back in the panels. I was intrigued by all the patterns in the labels and decided to use a sequence of some of the patterns derived from certain labels and also colors from other labels on the six panels of my tunnel book.
