A Second Look at Just One Look

The Book Arts Guild and University of Washington Libraries Present: Just One Look: an exhibition of contemporary book arts exploring the theme of Women and Vision Exhibition on view through July 29, 2016 Special Collections, Allen Library South Basement, University of Washington, Seattle Thirty new artists’ books, most commissioned specifically for this exhibition, were created by artists from across the country as well as from the region. Each was inspired by a text proposed, for the most part, by faculty from the UW Humanities departments including, Classics, English, Asian Languages, Germanics, Art History, and Philosophy. Oral stories from the Salish, Muslim and Latino cultures are also included.

Cathy DeForest's Vision Quilt Project Aims to Prevent Gun Violence

Cathy DeForest, a book artist many 23 Sandy fans have known and admired for years, has started a new project called Vision Quilt, which is working to prevent gun violence. According to the web site, "The Vision Quilt will create a national network of supporters cultivating compassionate, nonviolent change through the making and exhibiting of quilt panels created by thousands of people across the country. " The project has a call for participants to create panels of fabric or canvas on the them of "It is possible.

One of the places that makes Portland so quirky and lovable is the CC Stern Type Foundry Museum. Located down near the horse race track, populated with quirky souls mad about metal type and filled with ancient equipment that looks more Rube Goldberg than printer’s craft, it is a treasure to behold. To watch these folks pour molten lead is a step back in time like no other.
