Poetic and Visual Experiments with Goethe’s Zur Farbenlehre
Mutterfarbe is a work of experimental text + visual translations and poems by Brandi Katherine Herrera. Using Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s seminal work, Zur Farbenlehre (Theory of Colors, 1810) as a primary source. Working during a residency in Germany, Herrera translated sections of the text from German to English for the first time since Charles Eastlake’s 1840 edition.

23 Sandy is pleased to preview this stunning new edition featuring poems by Michael Dickman and Matthew Dickman, monotypes by Keith Achepohl, printing and design by Sandy Tilcock. This sumptuous collaborative work features ten deeply felt and personal poems, five each, from two highly-regarded twin-brother poets written in memory of their brother Darin Hull, who lost his life to a drug overdose. The poems are paired with velvety black photogravures reproduced from original trace monotypes by Keith Achepohl.

One hundred years ago, beloved American poet William Stafford was born in Hutchinson, Kansas. Although drafted into World War II, Stafford abstained from fighting as a conscientious objector. Instead, he worked in the civilian public service camps.

Around the world poetry fans celebrate the birthday of William Stafford with readings and other events. To mark the occasion we have created a special "Curated Collection" of artist books and broadsides that feature the poetry of William Stafford as well as his son Kim.
In Portland you can join the fun this Sunday, January 20 at 2:00 at Blackfish Gallery in the Pearl as they host a William Stafford Birthday Celebration poetry reading in honor of the late Oregon Poet Laureate.

23 Sandy has the great luck to be located in Portland, a hotbed of poetry, and the home of four young poets who are making an impressive name for themselves on the national scene these days. Those four poets, Carl Adamshick, Michael Dickman and his twin brother Matthew Dickman, and Mike McGriff are featured in several broadsides and artist books that we carry here in the gallery. One of the newest broadsides is Savages, which was recently published by Wendell Buck and features a poem by Dorianne Laux celebrating these "boys.
