One of the places that makes Portland so quirky and lovable is the CC Stern Type Foundry Museum. Located down near the horse race track, populated with quirky souls mad about metal type and filled with ancient equipment that looks more Rube Goldberg than printer’s craft, it is a treasure to behold. 23 Sandy is pleased to preview this stunning new edition featuring poems by Michael Dickman and Matthew Dickman, monotypes by Keith Achepohl, printing and design by Sandy Tilcock. This sumptuous collaborative work features ten deeply felt and personal poems, five each, from two highly-regarded twin-brother poets written in memory of their brother Darin Hull, who lost his life to a drug overdose. The poems are paired with velvety black photogravures reproduced from original trace monotypes by Keith Achepohl.

Ellen Knudson has a magnificent new book in the gallery titled, Made Up. Photos don't do this letterpress marvel justice. The drum leaf binding includes eight gate folds that open out into whimsical "non-scientific" illustrations about "the imaginary cellular composition of the human body.

One hundred years ago, beloved American poet William Stafford was born in Hutchinson, Kansas. Although drafted into World War II, Stafford abstained from fighting as a conscientious objector. Instead, he worked in the civilian public service camps.

I am a HUGE fan of her work—she has a refreshingly original style using letterpress techniques that are result in gorgeous, layered, beautiful prints. Karen, who lives in Nebraska, is both an accomplished, widely-exhibited book artist and respected print maker.
