Hedi Kyle, the star of our current HELLO HEDI exhibition here at the gallery, made her first book in Berkeley, California in 1968. During her long career as a top-notch book conservator and teacher, Hedi inspired book artists around the world by inventing myriad innovative structures including the flag book, blizzard book, fishbone fold, Wunderkabinets, pivoting panel book and many others. She truly revolutionized the field of book arts with her penchant for play, material explorations and willingness to share.

Hedi Kyle’s Poem

Mark Wangberg, an artist featured in the HELLO HEDI exhibition opening Friday wrote the following poem celebrating the star of our show, Hedi Kyle. Mark's work in the show, Rusty, is typical of the love that so many artists feel for Hedi. In his artist statement, Mark writes, "The Rusty book IS a Hedi Kyle structure, though it may be unknown as I don’t think she named it or ever taught it.

Here's a terrific quote by Hedi Kyle, "Good packaging not only enhances the object side, it also heightens the sensuous pleasure and curiosity to reach it. " This is something I wish more book artists would think about when making books. Not only do enclosures such as slipcases, wrappers or boxes enhance an artist book, but the protection aspect is of utmost importance as well.
