Now Showing in Back Matter Gallery: Ocean Etchings by Nancy Prior
Multidisciplinary artist Nancy Prior exhibits a series of prints created from copper plates etched in the ocean at high and low tides. The plates were created during a residency at Sou'wester Lodge in Long Beach, WA. Photographs of the process are exhibited along with the prints.
Nancy Prior is the director of No. 2 Print Shop, an artist collective and printmaking studio in SE Portland. She also collaborates on a project with Adam Moser called LIKEWISE, a bar that exists to support artists and their practice, and home of the first ever bartender in residency program.
Back Matter is a gallery-within-a-gallery, aka the back room here at 23 Sandy Gallery, curated by Erin Mickelson.
The back matter of a book can serve many purposes: it can continue the narrative of the main text, provide supplementary information, or comment on the historical and cultural impact of the book.
Inspired by the definition of back matter, Back Matter is a space to explore the many methods book artists may employ in the creation of their work—from the concepts that inspire and inform the art to the many techniques of designing and combining text and image.
