Cranes & Iris is a flag book depicting Japanese cranes in a wetland with blooming iris. It is one in a series of unique artist’s books that I am making about cranes. I chose to make intricately cut flags in the form of birds and sections of bog. The flag book structure is particularly suited to imagery of birds in flight. Here the overlapping sections of flags give depth to the landscape. The cutaway cover invites the viewer into the book.
Winner: Library Choice Award. Congratulations, Penelope!
