Cranes & Iris is a flag book depicting Japanese cranes in a wetland with blooming iris. It is one in a series of unique artist's books that I am making about cranes. I chose to make intricately cut flags in the form of birds and sections of bog. The flag book structure is particularly suited to imagery of birds in flight. Here the overlapping sections of flags give depth to the landscape. The cutaway cover invites the viewer into the book.

Artist Bio
Penelope Hall lives in the western mountains of Maine, where she works as a book artist and clay sculptor. Her pieces are inspired from her natural surroundings, from travels, especially years spent living in Okinawa, and from the many human situations in which she has found herself over the years. Penelope has studied bookbinding, printmaking and sculpture at workshops at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Maine College of Art, University of Southern Maine and with local artists. She has also taught numerous workshops and was an artist in residence at Skowhegan Middle School in Skowhegan, Maine in the spring of 2007.
