Backyard Food Chain by Elizabeth Sanford

This tunnel book features one of the many battles for survival that enfold in the woods behind my house. The spicebush swallowtail caterpillars are easy to spot in their golden instar stage, feasting on sassafras leaves. In the background, a nuthatch creeps down a branch while looking for a different kind of meal. A linked chain of words meanders around the sides and back of the book. Each word in the chain may be coupled with the one before and after to form common expressions, such as “food chain” or “chain reaction.” Each letter of each word is encased in a green circle, echoing the green circular eggs of this butterfly.
