Two New Shows Opening Friday

Join us First Friday, March 6 from 6-9 p.m. for an artist reception!

Photo+Book is a juried exhibition of self-published, on-demand photography books. This show celebrates a new digital innovation in the world or photography. Online services such as Blurb, Lulu and others allow photographers (or anyone else who wants to publish a book!) the ability to produce a book store-quality book with the click of a mouse. Preview Photo+Book here.

Also showing this month: Lady Vengeance. British artist Sarah Bodman’s artist books are inspired by the darker side of nature, human nature and history.

Bodman’s inspiration is the darker side of nature, human nature and history. Like a beautiful poisonous flower, her limited edition, handmade books open with images that lure the viewer in by making the subject look attractive. But, what lies beneath must be, of course, very sinister. Bodman is Research Fellow at the Centre for Fine Print Research at the University of West England in Bristol where she runs projects investigating and promoting contemporary book arts. You can see a full catalog of her show here.

Artist Spotlight

Heidi Kirkpatrick

Heidi is one of our favorite gallery artists! Her work has been featured in several shows here at 23 Sandy and she is also in the current Photo+Book show with her gorgeous book titled, Lost and Found. In addition, she recently brought us a new series of miniature photographs on copper and aluminum that are so sweet and unbelievably tiny—think smaller than two inches.

From her artist statement: “Heidi uses photographs to transform found objects into playful and seductive sculptures. She fuses transparent figurative and family portraits with children’s toy blocks, games and collectible souvenirs, creating a playful tension between imagery and object. These works depart from the formality of a frame as they are arranged on a table top or a shelf, often stacked or placed side by side to reveal narratives of family snapshots or the complexities of the feminine allure. In combination, Heidi gives us a chance to visit these earlier playful times while drawing on memories, contemporary issues, and visual formality.”

Stop by and see these tiny treasures soon!

Last Weekend for Mark & Virginia’s Shows

Wow! It’s hard to believe how fast time flies! Where did the month go?

Two wonderful shows by Mark Tompkins and Virginia Flynn end this Saturday, February 28. Be sure to stop by and see them before they are gone. Mark’s photographs paired with lines of his own poetry are dreamy and captivating.

Virginia’s paper cuts inspired by poetry are sweet and magical. And, selling fast. Only three of Virginia’s cuts remain unsold. But, we still have several of her sweet little books. Viriginia has also decided to take commission orders. If your favorite paper cut has already sold you can place an order and she will create a new cut for you based on the original.

A reminder: if you purchased work from either Mark or Virginia’s show you can pick it up on Saturday from 12:00-6:00 p.m.

Thanks for making February such a fun month! Two artist lectures, an inspiring workshop and a book fair in San Francisco. Whew! No wonder it went by so fast!
