Artist Statement

Oh, the elegance of our alphabet! Only 26 letters can combine to make thousands of words. Economically and handsomely shaped, they are wonderfully suited to changing their form as witnessed by their many incarnations and the variety of fonts available in word-processing programs.

Calligraphy is the art of writing letters in a way that underscores their beauty. I have always included words in calligraphic form in my artwork, and, through the years, I have discovered that many viewers respond most strongly to the calligraphy. To honor that response I am in the process of creating a series of artworks that include calligraphy and, another book art, paste paper.  Each art work is devoted to a letter or several letters of the alphabet.

Paste paper is created by painting a mixture of paint and home-made paste on wet paper that has been laid on a wet hard surface. After painting the paper with several different colors of the paste/paint mixture, I scrape, drag, brush, swirl etc. with different tools, (such as combs, broad-nibbed calligraphy pens etc.) to make designs and/or images, including the letters I use in my series, “homage to the alphabet.”

Artist Biography

I love words. I read; I write poetry. I taught English and later became a school counselor and listened to words. This love  motivated me to take a class in calligraphy and another and another etc. A class in paste paper enabled me to illustrate my poetry written in calligraphic form with images created from the papers I make.
