“elemental” is a celebration of the four elemental forces of nature, appreciating both the malevolence and benevolence. To signify the human struggle with the beauty, passion, and destructive power of nature, each element--Fire, Water, Earth, and Air--is accompanied with an appropriate quote by a passionate artist--Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Allen Poe, Lord Byron, and Frida Kahlo.
“elemental” was handprinted on Johannot mould made paper using a combination of digitally created polymer plates and vintage wood type and bound with a printed rice paper wrap. Printed in 2006 is a numbered limited edition of 53.
Artist Biography
Melissa Kaup-Augustine is a graphic designer and has been teaching typography, graphic design, and book design for nearly a decade. Recently rediscovering the beauty of tones and textures of the letterpress, “elemental” is the first in many planned publications for Lizard Press.
