Artist Statement
The three small books I have submitted were created with portability in mind. These fetish-like objects offer an intimate view of the transience, tenderness and traps of romantic love. They are part of an ongoing body of work I call “pocket art”— small pieces of art that can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere an escape from the everyday is desired.
Green-eyed Dreamer is an etching printed on handmade Japanese paper. It explores the toxic nature of jealousy and the consequences of questioning the risky leap into love.With its flowers and hot colours, Summer is about the flush and impermanence of new love. Even as the couple comes together, they seem to be aware of the transient nature of the relationship.
Pillow Book on a String is a playful interpretation on a Japanese classic. The imagery of kissing printed on miniature satin pillows is a take on love that is both intimate and humorous. A red ribbon ties everything together, and allows the pillows to be either hung up or piled as if on a bed.
Artist Biography
Rebecca Cowan is a printmaker and book artist who has participated in exhibitions in Canada, the United States, South Korea, India and Australia. Her work is included in public and private collections throughout Canada including the National Library of Canada and the Canada Council Art Bank.
