Artist Statement

“Death’s Little Handbook of Hours” holds these secrets and asks these questions: Is this Death's handbook or who's little book of hours was/is this? What secrets does death hold?

Is death on the wing? Did the miser say his prayers in time? On page one Bosch’s “Death and the Miser” is etched on the window. Who prays for death/Death? Why the windows on pages one and the second to last page? Do we dare peek inside...? Is the length of this mysterious book of hours saying our time is short: no time for words view the images and pray? Can we cheat death and wave goodbye. Is that the message of the last two pages? Oh, but dear viewer when you take take Death’s hand to open the window you see part of a palm trunk and the visual pun is that Death has you in the palm of its hand.

Artist Biography

Born: Hastings, Nebraska. M.F.A. in printmaking, University of Kansas. Professor of Art, Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas. 130+ juried shows. 40+ awards. Works in several public collections. Represented by: Charles M. Young, Portland, CT. Strecker-Nelson Gallery, Manhattan, Kansas. Made my first artist book in 2004
